    Masefau Defensive Fortifications

    MasefauAmerican Samoa1942 (World War II)

Situated along the remote, rainforest-framed beach of Masefau Bay on northern Tutuila, the Masefau Defensive Fortifications are a pair of unique octagonal World War II concrete pillboxes. Built in 1942 by the U.S. Marine Corps to defend against potential Japanese amphibious invasion, these military bunkers feature an unusual open interior design found nowhere else on the island. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the pillboxes are infamous for intense nocturnal paranormal activity, including phantom boot steps echoing inside concrete chambers, disembodied Marine voices, and glowing spirit spheres hovering over the ocean surf.
