Somerset Maugham resided during a six-week quarantine. His observations of fellow guest Miss Sadie Thompson—a colorful woman fleeing a red-light district—inspired Maugham's iconic short story 'Rain' (and subsequent Hollywood films). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is famed for phantom perfume scents, footsteps in upstairs hallways, and the fleeting apparition of Sadie Thompson herself.
