    Satala Cemetery

    SatalaAmerican SamoaLate 19th Century

Nestled along the inner curve of Pago Pago Harbor in Satala village, Satala Cemetery is American Samoa's historic foreign burial ground. Established in the late 19th century by the U.S. Navy, it served as the designated burial site for American naval officers, foreign traders, mariners, missionaries, and non-Samoan residents whose native burial customs differed from traditional Samoan family land interments. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cemetery is famous for subtle supernatural occurrences, including phantom naval guards, shadowy figures amongst the headstones, and disembodied maritime whispers.
