Turtle and Shark Cove (Laumei ma Malie)
Situated along the dramatic black basalt cliffs of Vaitogi village on Tutuila's southern shoreline, Turtle and Shark Cove (Laumei ma Malie) is one of the most sacred and famous legendary sites in Samoan culture. According to centuries-old oral tradition, an impoverished blind grandmother and her young granddaughter transformed themselves into a sea turtle and a shark after leaping into the sea to escape famine. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cove is renowned for supernatural manifestations where calling an ancient ritual chant reportedly summons a sea turtle and shark to surface in the crashing waves.
