Veliki Tabor Castle
Veliki Tabor Castle is one of Croatia's best-preserved medieval and Renaissance fortresses, crowning a picturesque hill in the green region of Hrvatsko Zagorje. Built primarily in the 15th and 16th centuries by the noble Rattkay family, it is world-renowned for the tragic legend of Veronika Desinić and Frederick II of Celje. Veronika, a peasant girl who secretly married the young count, was executed and her body entombed within the castle's thick stone walls. Her wailing ghost is said to still haunt the pentagonal keep.
