    Pazin Castle

    PazinCroatia988

Pazin Castle (Pazinski kaštel) is the largest and best-preserved medieval fortification in the Istrian peninsula, dramatically perched on the edge of a 120-metre vertical cliff directly above the cavernous Pazin Chasm (Pazinska jama). First mentioned in historical documents in 988, this formidable stone fortress inspired French author Jules Verne's famous adventure novel 'Mathias Sandorf.' Over centuries of sieges, executions, and noble rule, the castle gained a dark reputation for subterranean mysteries, phantom cries echoing from the chasm, and spectral prisoners wandering its courtyards.
