Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Topolje

    TopoljeCroatia1722

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a solitary, isolated Baroque church standing in open fields outside the village of Topolje in the Baranja region of eastern Croatia. Built in 1722 by Prince Eugene of Savoy to celebrate his historic victory over Ottoman forces in the Battle of Zenta, the church holds a unique architectural anomaly: it has no belfry tower. Local folklore attributes this to demonic intervention, claiming that every attempt to build a spire collapsed, while tales of dark rituals and phantom Ottoman horsemen make it one of Baranja's most eerie landmarks.
