Sønderborg Castle
Sønderborg Castle is an ancient coastal fortress guarding the Als Sound in South Jutland. Founded around 1158 by King Valdemar the Great, the castle evolved from a medieval defensive tower into a formidable royal palace and military stronghold. The fortress gained dark historical notoriety as the prison of deposed King Christian II, who spent seventeen agonizing years in solitary confinement within its blue tower chamber, leaving behind legends of his restless ghost pacing the castle halls.
