Trunyan Cemetery
Trunyan Cemetery, situated in an isolated enclave on the eastern shore of Lake Batur in Bali, is the ancient open-air burial ground of the indigenous Bali Aga people. Unlike the predominant Hindu Balinese tradition of cremation, the villagers of Trunyan lay their deceased out exposed to the elements inside woven bamboo cages beneath a sacred Taru Menyan tree, whose natural fragrance mysteriously neutralizes all decomposition odors.
