    Lawang Sewu

    SemarangIndonesia1904–1907

Lawang Sewu, meaning 'Thousand Doors' in Javanese, is a grand early 20th-century colonial complex in Semarang, Central Java, built as the headquarters for the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. Renowned across Southeast Asia for its striking Indische Empire architecture, stained glass windows, and labyrinthine layout, the site gained a grim paranormal reputation due to its gruesome WWII history when Japanese occupation forces converted its subterranean water channels into harsh detention vaults and execution chambers.
