    Fort Manoel

    Fort Manoel is a magnificent 18th-century star fort situated on Manoel Island in Marsamxett Harbour, Gżira. Built by the Order of Saint John under Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, the fortress is famous for its baroque military architecture and for housing one of Malta's most celebrated ghosts: the Black Knight. The spirit, resembling Grand Master Vilhena himself, was famously witnessed by British officers and Maltese workmen during 20th-century restoration works.
