National Highway 66 (formerly designated as NH 17), the crucial arterial highway connecting Mumbai to Goa and South India, is infamous among long-distance truckers, local taxi drivers, and night commuters for its harrowing paranormal reputation. Passing through dense coastal forests, winding mountain ghats, and lonely Goan countryside, certain stretches of the highway—particularly near the villages of Saligao, Bambolim, and Agassaim—are reputedly haunted by hungry spirits and malevolent witches. Local folklore strictly warns night travelers never to carry raw meat or fish in their vehicles, asserting that the smell of non-vegetarian food attracts restless souls who haunt the dark asphalt past midnight.
