Dhanushkodi Ghost Town
Dhanushkodi, situated at the southeastern tip of Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu, was a flourishing port town until a catastrophic cyclone wiped it out in December 1964. Overnight, over 1,800 lives were lost, including all passengers on the incoming Pamban–Dhanushkodi Passenger train. Declared unfit for human habitation by the government, the ghostly sand-covered ruins of churches, railway stations, and homes now stand as a haunting monument surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.
