    Nohkalikai Falls, plunging 340 metres (1,115 feet) off the dramatic edge of the Meghalaya plateau near Sohra (Cherrapunji), is India's tallest plunge waterfall. Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, the waterfall derives its harrowing name—'Jump of Ka Likai' in the Khasi language—from one of the most tragic and gruesome tales in North-East Indian folklore. According to local tradition, a grieving mother threw herself over the precipice after her jealous second husband slaughtered and cooked her young daughter.
