    Located directly beneath St. Stephen's Cathedral in the center of Vienna, the Stephansdom Catacombs form a subterranean necropolis containing the remains of over 11,000 individuals. Built in the 14th century and expanded during the Great Plague of Vienna in 1679, these dark stone vaults house the Ducal Crypt containing Habsburg organs, bishops' tombs, and massive mass grave chambers filled with stacked human skulls and bones. Visitors and guides describe oppressive atmospheres, phantom whispers, and spectral apparitions in the unlit passages.

    Perched on an egg-shaped hill high above the dramatic 22-meter Pliva Waterfall where the Pliva River plunges into the Vrbas, the walled city of Jajce was the final royal capital of the independent Kingdom of Bosnia. Founded in the late 14th century by Grand Duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, Jajce features an imposing stone citadel and a subterranean underground catacomb church carved deep into the living rock. Known as the site where Bosnia's last king, Stjepan Tomašević, was crowned and later executed by Ottoman forces in 1463, Jajce is steeped in royal ghost lore and subterranean mysteries.

    The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo (Catacombe dei Cappuccini) are subterranean burial crypts located beneath the Capuchin Convent in Palermo, Sicily. Containing over 8,000 mummified bodies and skeletons dating from the late 16th century to the 1920s, it is one of the world's most extraordinary and macabre historical sites. The crypts are famously home to Rosalia Lombardo, 'The Sleeping Beauty,' whose exceptionally preserved body has spawned mysterious claims of blinking eyes and supernatural phenomena.
