Old Fort of Zanzibar
The Old Fort of Zanzibar, locally known as Boma la Kale, is the oldest surviving structure in Stone Town. Constructed by Omani Arabs in the late 17th century following the expulsion of the Portuguese, this massive square coral-stone fortress served as a military garrison, prison, and execution ground. Beyond its lively modern amphitheatre and craft market lie centuries-old tales of imprisoned captives, phantom marchers, and unseen spectral sentinels.
