Belogradchik Fortress
Belogradchik Fortress, also known as Kaleto, is an ancient stone stronghold spectacularly integrated into the dramatic red and yellow sandstone Belogradchik Rocks in northwestern Bulgaria. Originally constructed by the Romans in the 1st century CE as a frontier watchtower, the fortress was expanded by Bulgarian tsars and Ottoman sultans over nearly two millennia. The site is famous for its tragic siege histories, public executions, and centuries of dark local folklore tied to its towering, human-shaped rock monoliths.
