Sadie Thompson Inn (Sadie's by the Sea / Max Haleck Building)
Located along the scenic harbor road in Malaloa, Pago Pago, the historic Sadie Thompson Inn is world-famous as the 1916 lodging house where celebrated British author W. Somerset Maugham resided during a six-week quarantine. His observations of fellow guest Miss Sadie Thompson—a colorful woman fleeing a red-light district—inspired Maugham's iconic short story 'Rain' (and subsequent Hollywood films). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is famed for phantom perfume scents, footsteps in upstairs hallways, and the fleeting apparition of Sadie Thompson herself.
