Cape Coast Castle
Originally established as a timber trading lodge named Carolusborg by the Swedish Africa Company in 1653, Cape Coast Castle grew into one of the largest European slave fortresses on the West African coast. Rebuilt in stone by the British in 1665, the massive complex held thousands of captive Africans in oppressive underground dungeons before they were marched onto slave ships through the infamous Door of No Return. Renowned worldwide for its sobering historical significance, Cape Coast Castle is also famous for persistent reports of phantom whispers, spectral shadows in the dark vaults, and overwhelming cold spots experienced by visitors and caretakers alike.
